Kevin and Tyler Jones Open 2025 with Win on Chowan River

The second event of the 2025 Neuse Sport Shop Eastern NC Bass Challenge season took place this past weekend on Kerr Lake. 135 teams competed in the event. The fishing on Kerr Lake was great as 93 limits of bass were brought to the Bass Challenge scales Saturday afternoon. The lake produced numerous 3-5 pound bass.
After all 135 teams weighed in Saturday, it was Jimmy Roughton and Neil Smith who took the victory. The team brought 19.75 pounds of bass to the scales and weighed in the tournament big fish which was 5.69 pounds!
After the tournament, we talked to Jimmy Roughton about their day:
“Recently, Neil and I have started practicing for these tournaments separately in our own boats. We can cover different sections of the lake faster that way. On Friday, we both found fish up the lake and down in Nutbush. We decided to start our day in Nutbush Creek. In the first 10 minutes, Neil caught a 3.5-pounder, and then soon after, I caught a 5. We decided then to stay in Nutbush all day. On Friday, I found a big one on the bed that was about 5 pounds. I could tell she wasn’t ready to bite. We checked her early Saturday and she still wasn’t ready. At the end of the tournament, we stopped on her again, and she was finally ready, and we caught her.”
Jimmy went on to say, “We fished for big fish all day. No senkos, nothing small. We focused primarily on secondary points because everyone was going back into the pockets. We felt like there was too much pressure in the pockets so we stayed on the secondary points leading into those pockets.”
They won our Neuse Sport Shop $5,100 1st place prize and our Greenville Toyota $400 tournament big bass award! Jimmy Roughton was also fishing the event out of a new Triton Bass Boat that made him eligible for the $8,000 Triton Gold contingency prize, making the team’s total take-home winnings $13,500!
Our next event will be April 19 on the Roanoke River in Plymouth, NC.
The Bass Challenge paid cash prizes to our top 22 teams in this event. It took 13.66 pounds to finish inside the Bass Challenge money line.
